Silk screen vs laser vs sublimation: choosing a logo method for drinkware

A practical comparison of the five decoration methods used on stainless steel tumblers — cost, durability, colour range and when each one fails.

Silk screen vs laser vs sublimation: choosing a logo method for drinkware

The decoration method decides whether your logo still looks right after six months of dishwasher cycles. Here is how the five common methods compare on stainless steel drinkware.

Silk screen printing

Ink is pushed through a mesh screen onto a coated or bare surface and cured. Best for one to three flat colours, medium-to-large logo sizes and high volumes. Cheap per piece once the screen is made. Limit: gradients and photographs are not possible, and very fine detail fills in.

Laser engraving

A laser removes the coating or etches the steel, leaving a permanent mark that cannot peel or fade. Ideal for logos that must survive industrial washing, plus serial numbers and personalisation. Limit: it is monochrome — you get the colour of the material underneath, not your Pantone.

Heat transfer

A printed transfer is applied with heat and pressure. This is the usual choice for multi-colour artwork and photographic detail in small-to-medium runs. Limit: it sits on the surface, so it needs a good coating under it and a careful wash instruction.

Thermal sublimation

Ink turns to gas and bonds into a polymer coating, so the image sits inside the surface rather than on top of it. Excellent for full-wrap photographic designs. Limit: it needs a coated body — it does not work on bare stainless steel.

3D printing (silicone / TPU)

Raised silicone branding gives a tactile, premium feel and survives handling well. Common on lids and handles. Limit: it needs its own tooling and is best on flat or gently curved surfaces.

A quick decision rule

One or two flat colours, high volume: silk screen. Permanent, dishwasher-proof mark: laser. Full-colour artwork or photo: heat transfer or sublimation. Tactile premium accent: 3D silicone. If you are unsure, ask for two sample cups with different methods — the extra sample cost is far cheaper than reprinting a container.
